Well done, Joanne (I’m a little late to the party!) I too am wrestling with potential titles at the moment. I like ‘Coming Home’ for your book. x

Comment on Maggie; My Brain Finally Got it… by Margaret James http://cbc.maggiejs.ca/?p=1035#comment-457 Sun, 30 Dec 2018 13:42:57 +0000 http://cbc.maggiejs.ca/?p=1035#comment-457 There are those who insist that Old St. Nick’s Elves are, officially, subordinate clauses. But no. Subordinate clauses, as I understand them, are short modifying strings of words, fulfilling the role of an adjective or adverb but more verbosely, traditionally offset from the rest of the sentence by commas.

If you choose the right nouns and verbs, you can get the message across much more smoothly and vividly… Or, so my epiphany proclaimed.

Best of everything to all in the new year, and don’t forget to eat some Cabbage New Year’s Day for good luck and good fortune through the coming year!

I love that moment when things click! As far as possible, I try to avoid adverbs (I’m sure a few sneak in) and keep adjectives to a minimum. I know I don’t write beautifully, I don’t have that wonderful poetic grasp of language that some authors do (including yourself), but I hope I can tell a story. I think your writing is wonderful, but it’s a learning process… As for subordinate clauses, my grammar school education let me down!!! (What is it?!)
